Fox Glacier, West Coast, South Island, New Zealand 20th March 2005

Signs along the road in indicate the massive extent of the glaciers retreat in the last 75 years. I also saw for myself evidence of this in Argentina (Perito Moreno and Upsala Glaciers) and in Chile (San Rafael) where markers indicate where the ice front was at certain points in time. The Fox Glacier may well cease to exist in the next 50 years at its current rate of melting. No doubt the Franz Joseph Glacier, just a bit further down the road, will also undoubtedly suffer a similar fate.
