We were fortunate to have visited Werrikimbe National Park west of Wauchope NSW on Saturday 24th and Sunday 25th May 2014 in excellent weather.
On the Saturday we drove from Forster to Elands then across Noddingbul Rd until we hit the Oxley Highway. We then drove down to Yarras and turned off to Birdwood before entering the Werrikimbe National Park via Forbes Forest Way, eventually arriving at Plateau Beech Rest Area located at 1100 metres. Nothofagus moorei as well as numerous other cool temperate rainforest species were seen on the 2.5 kilometre loop walk which passed by 2 waterfalls.
After overnighting in the Wauchope Motel we drove the even longer journey back up the winding, steep in places, Oxley Highway till we came to Fenwicks Rd which continued on to Cobcroft Rest Area located at 1050m. Cobcroft was a small warm temperate rainforest remnant at the head of a gully surrounded by Sydney Blue Gum and several other Eucalypt species. The rainforest was full of large Sloanea woollsii and Acradenia euodiformis among may other species with lots of fungi evident.
Following a walk around the 2 km walking track loop we headed for World Heritage listed Fenwicks scrub for a very short visit. It will be necessary for a return visit here in the future and on that occasion a trip into Willi Willi National Park will be planned. Unfortunately it was not possible this trip due to landslides on access roads.
