Opening the log containing the native bee hive was done by slowly and careflly removing sections of the outer wood with an angle grinder to try to locate the centre of the actual hive in the log.
Once located the brood comb, wax and honey could be removed with the brood comb wax to be split between two new boxes. In order to ensure that both hives were strong a third hive was not used.
