Small Hive Beetle Trap - October 2011

Small Hive Beetle (Aethina tumida) was first discovered in Australia in 2002. Managing the invasive Small Hive Beetle has become a major concern for Beekeepers around the world.
Here is one such effort to minimise the impact of this species on honey production by European bees.
The trap detailed here is in an evolution phase but was highly effective in immediately capturing Small Hive Beetles almost instantly after it was installed on this hive.

A new threat to Australia's European Honey Bee populations arrived from Asia in 2007 in the mast of a lone yacht in Cairns - dubbed the 'Flying Cane Toad', Apis cerana is an Asian Bee which not only has the capacity to out compete the European Bee, a much stronger honey producer, but also carries the Varroa desructor mite which has devastated European Honey Bee populations in both the USA and New Zealand. Potentially the Asian Bee can similarly impact here in Australia if the threat is not managed effectively.
