Offshore Reef Campaign at Old Bar, Manning Valley, NSW, March 2013

lt;bgt;Copyright - All Rights Reserved - Black Diamond Imageslt;/bgt;br/br/Beach Erosion has become of very serious concern at Old Bar, a small coastal township on the southern side of the mouth of the southerm channel of the Manning River, just to the east of Taree.br/Already a 3 houses have succumbed to the power of the sea and as many as 20 properties are seriously threatened along with the threat of further loss of sand dunes, many covered in littoral rainforest.br/Erosion in some places, such as the Lewis St beach front, has seen the loss of as much as 36 metres since 2005.br/br/It is not surprising that some concerned residents feel they have to get on the front foot to try to prevent the problem becoming even worse. br/br/The likelihood of the beach being the site of the first artificial reef in NSW came a step closer in 2011 when an engineering company recommended in a feasibility study that an offshore artificial reef could potentially arrest coastal erosion here at Old Bar.br/a href="http://www.smh.com.au/environment/climate-change/new-reef-may-rescue-old-bar-20110604-1fm4k.html#ixzz2QDpRqf8R"; target="_blank"Reference/a br/br/I am not sure where the fundraising effort and the position of the project is at as of April 2013 but the group has recently secured a grant via Rob Oakshot from the Federal Government of 30,000 with a further grant of $10,000 looking a probability from the NSW Government.br/br/If Old Bar is successful in its bid to build an artificial reef other shire councils along the coast will quickly follow suit. Belongil at Byron Bay is just one such example where expensive property is being lost at a rapid rate in recent years. There are many other examples.br/br/Here are some of my a href="http://www.flickriver.com/photos/blackdiamondimages/tags/beacherosion/"; target="_blank"BEACH EROSION/a images which show the extent of the problem.
