Lord Howe Island is a beautiful world heritage listed subtropical island 550km off the East Coast of Australia off Port Macquarie, or 770km, or 2 hours from Sydney by air.
Lord Howe Island was formed from Volcanic eruptions resulting from moving ocean plates some 6.9 million years ago with the last lava flows around 6.4 million years ago.
Lord Howe has the worlds most southerly coral reefs and several large mountains of volcanic origin (Mt Lidgbird 777m and Mt Gower 875m)which make this place literally a paradise on earth.
Lord Howe is home to several endemic species of Howea Palms or as they are also known-Kentia Palms,as well as a number of unique birds,endemic only to Lord Howe.
Lord Howe Island is home to only 350 permanent residents and a maximum of 400 short stay tourists at any time (10,000 per year).The island has limited roads and few cars.Residents are not permited to have cats due to their impact on local wildlife.Most transport is by foot,bike or boat.
