Old Stump in Talawahl Nature Reserve, Just South of Purfleet, Taree, NSW
In the days before chainsaws special planks were inserted into the tree by expert axemen who stood out from the trunk of the tree on these extended planks while cutting the tree down. Sometimes they were quite high up and a fall no doubt was always on the cards. They may have placed a rope around the tree and around their back to aid their own safety but I imagine it would of minimal help should the axeman overbalance.
