Merry Garth,on Davies Lane,is situated on the south eastern side of Mt Wilson and has expansive views out to Mt Banks,Hay,Bell and Tomah.
The garden was commenced by Keith and Elizabeth (Libby) Raines when they moved to Merry Garth in1979 and it is still a work in progress.
Merry Garth is an oasis of colour in the midst of lush mountain rainforest characterised by tall eucalypts with majestic tree ferns and rainforest trees sheltering underneath.
Below the house rock terracing has been used to effectively allow a wonderful collection of exotic cool climate flowering and folliage shrubs and plants as well as a profusion of delightful perrenials.
Merry Garth features a rainforest walk as well as trails accessing the vast array of beautiful shrubs and colourful deciduous trees planted over many years by the owners,many quite rare,having been propogated in Keith and Libby's small commercial nursery.
Paths under the shade of maples, dogwoods, conifers, beech and tulip trees take one past williamsii camellias,helleborus,dicentra,wood anemonies,erythoniums,trilliums,
pleiones,hostas,hydrangeas,nerines and cyclamens. Coachwoods, possomwood,sassafras,tree ferns and giant banksia integrifolia(Mt Wilson variety) feature in the rainforest.
Neat paths through the large sunny rock garden allow access to many smaller shrubs including alpine phlox,pulsatilla,dianthus,androsace,lewisia,hebe and erica,daphne,small bulbs and dwarf conifers.Weeping maples,often against a backdrop of lush green,provide contrasting form and colour.
Merry Garth has a specialised nursery of cool climate colourful plants which are available for purchase at very reasonable prices.
From Richmond take Bells Line of Road to Mt Wilson turnoff; follow the signs to Mt Wilson; travel along The Avenue past the church to Turkish Baths, turn left into Mt Irvine Rd, then soon after turn right into Davies Lane.
