Honokane'Nui Cabins, Honokane'Nui Valley, Hamakua Coast, Big Island Hawaii

These cabins, built by the Kohala Ditch Diggers are deep in the Honokane'Nui Valley. We reached them by 'Paradise' Helicopter flying down the narrow valley between and below the ridge lines of the steep gorges of the Honokane'Nui Valley.
The cabins are very isolated and there is not much here other than the steep surrounding gorges the cabins and a small creek.
Introduced species including Ginger, Guava, Sugar Cane and surprisingly - quite tall Australian Red Bloodwood trees were some of the main vegetation species. The Kohala"ditch", built over 18 months began construction in 1905. When completed it moved millions of gallons of water to the northern sugarcane fields of the North Kohala. The sugar cane industry has since declined. The Kohala ditch is over 14 miles in length.
