Description: Bushy shrub or small tree to 6 m. Leaves green, sometimes grey underneath, ovate, 3-15 cm long, 3-12 cm wide (juvenile leaves can be larger) usually turning red with age. Fruit a capsule, 8-10 mm wide, seeds partly covered with a green aril occurring December-March. Usually occurs on margins of littoral rainforest and particularly in regrowth areas.Propagation: Propagate with freshly collected seed from ripe fruit. Plant immediately in clean seedling mix of 2/3 washed river sand and 1/3 peat moss or organic matter. Plants can be propagated from tip and semi-ripe hardwood cuttings with varying success. Regeneration use: Pioneer species in severely degraded ecosystems. Essential part of climax community.
